Does CBD Have An Impact On Brain Cancer?
Most people will never encounter brain cancer in themselves or in a friend or family member. However, there are an unfortunate few who will encounter it. According to the National Cancer Institute or NCI, approximately 24,000 Americans will be diagnosed with brain cancer in some form or another. To make this statistic worse, of that 24,000 about 16,000 of them will die from this disease each year. While Brain cancer might account for a mere 1.4 percent of all cancer diagnoses, less than 3 percent of these will end in death. While this is a low number, the long-term (5-year) survival rate for anyone diagnosed with brain cancer is very low at a mere 33 percent even if they are diagnosed early.
Many patients, as well as, researchers, believe that cannabidiol or CBD may help. There are a variety of supplements and therapies that are under consideration. As the various challenges in treating the condition are analyzed, it is obvious that removing the tumors surgically may cause serious consequences to individuals. Chemotherapy might not always work in such situations. Some drugs won’t penetrate the various barriers that the brain has in place for self-protection. Health brain tissue is very protective of the brain and forms a barrier that many of the chemotherapy chemicals can’t cross. There is also the concern of damaging healthy brain tissue when utilizing chemotherapy treatments as well as radiation treatments.
Thus, many of the typical cancer treatments won’t work for brain cancer. For this reason, oncologists, researchers, and patients are all seeking alternative means of treatments for brain cancer. CBD is one of the cutting-edge treatments that are being considered.
Although brain cancer is rather rare, it does happen. There aren’t any specific studies that yet show how the CBD oils will interact with the cancer and the brain. Research is ongoing in regards to the treatment possibility.
Many who have been diagnosed with brain cancer have used CBD thanks to its ability to help impact other forms of cancer. According to a 2005 study, the CBD oils alter the structure of the cells and can work toward eradicating the cancer cells while protecting the healthy brain cells. The oils seem to eradicate the cancer cells better than any other form of cannabinoids. The main type of studies have been done on gliomas which are a common type of cancer in the brain.
In a 2010 study, it was determined that the CBD in mice hindered the cancer cells from inhabiting other healthy tissue. The cancer cells begin to lack the ability to cross over to healthier tissue and thus were stopped in their tracks from continuing to cause health issues in certain mice in the study. This gives great hope to using CBD as a regimen for treating brain cancer.
In the immediate future, there may be even more studies that will work toward seeing how the CBD oils work on various brain cancers. In 2014, the FDA or Food and Drug Administration has granted the CBD oils an “orphan drug” status, This allows the medication to be used in clinical trials that may use it to treat glioblastoma which is the most frequently found brain cancer. Hopefully, this study will help to find more ways of treating brain cancer.
